Started in 2001, the Dot NAME gTLD is the only one supposed to be for personal websites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are famous by. Initially, solely third-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to secure john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already taken third-level domain names remained running.
